How two rescue dogs inspired the launch of a designer pet brand

After a busy morning in the foothills of the Dandenongs walking her two staffies – Missy and Bo – BOco owner Leah Jones sat down to talk about the story behind her new petware company and lifelong love of dogs.

So, what started it all? When did BOco come to life?

“The idea had been bubbling away for a while. You meet so many other dog owners and you end up talking about all the accessories that go with ownership,” Leah said. “I realised how importantly people viewed these purchases. Of course they didn’t want to waste money, but they were also expressing their love and affection.”

BOco was born off the back of these pseudo-research adventures. And it seems Missy and Bo were also fussy when it came to all their accessories. Their collars needed to be soft and their beds even softer.

“As many people who own a rescue dog know, there can be an extra special bond there. Missy and Bo have had a huge impact on our lives. We know that sometimes it can seem a little extravagant spoiling our dogs. But I think we should celebrate the fact that humans love to give. And if it’s a product that not only looks great on your dog, is comfortable and lasts a long time, then why not?”

The next step was understanding exactly what certain types of dog owners wanted from accessories.

“Our desire was to create a great range of quality, contemporary fashioned inspired products. Reflecting current fashion and runway trends was integral to this. Like us, there are many owners out there who have a heap of fun styling their dogs. You can visit any busy café on the weekend to see how impeccably styled some of these furry friends are!”

What are some of the qualities people should look for in premium dog products?

“Firstly, beware cheap imitations. Always ask an online supplier what their return policy is and about the authenticity of their products. If you know and love a brand, then stick with it. A well-chosen collar or lead is about finding the perfect balance between fashion with functionality. For the discerning owner and dog, you shouldn’t have to compromise on quality or style. It’s a pretty simple philosophy for the BOco team.”

BOco are excited about new colour and product launches in the coming months.

Having received great feedback from customers they’re using this to expand on its luxury range. This includes stylish personalised dog collars which has gone live this week, adding a more pawsonal touch.

“You only have to go online to see how spoilt for choice dog owners now are. Rather than making this decision more confusing, BOco want to maintain a strong range of vibrant colours and elegant designs. We’re also looking at our own line of dog fragrances and care products. So watch this space.”
